GREAT DOCUMENTARIES:

HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU!

New York, NY -- September 27, 2004 --The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures presents its latest educational film seminar, Great Documentaries:   Here's Looking at You!   The panel discussion will take place from 7pm-9pm on Thursday, October 14, 2004 at the Harmonie Club (4 East 60 th St.) in Manhattan. Sheila Nevins, president of HBO Documentary and Family programming will serve as moderator of the six-person panel. The seminar will focus on their milestones, obstacles, and the emergence of the documentary genre and its influence on social issues and society.   The panelists participating are:   Rory Kennedy (American Hollow), Andrew Jarecki (Capturing the Friedmans), Barbara Kopple (Wild Man Blues), Katy Chevigny (Deadline), Al Maysles (Gimme Shelter), and Chris Hegedus & D.A. Pennebaker (The War Room).

 

Previous educational seminars include the spring panel Women Directors: How to Hack it in Hollywood featuring seven directors including Mira Nair and Lee Grant, as well as last year's Bad Girls...And Why We Love Them, hosted by Molly Haskell and Andrew Sarris.

 

The National Board of Review, with no commercial ties to the industry, was founded in 1909 to support excellence and free expression in film.   The group works to underwrite educational film programs, like Great Documentaries , and endow scholarships for film students and grants for up and coming directors.   In addition, the NBR screens over 300 films per year and kicks off the awards season each December by being the first group to announce annual winners.
