NATIONAL BOARD OF REVIEW

OF MOTION PICTURES

HONORS STUDENT FILMS

 

New York, NY – May 9, 2003 – The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures honored six student films from The School of Visual Arts and Columbia University this month.  

 

Last night at the School of Visual Arts' 14 th Annual Dusty Film Festival and Awards, the NBR gave Dana Yavin a grant of $3000 for Flatmates, the story of an unexpected friendship between two men from diverse backgrounds. Receiving a grant of $2000 was Ann Oren for Olga, the portrayal of a mysterious woman set on seducing an unsuspecting stranger.   Additionally, Kathrin Barmester was given a grant of $1000 for Linge, a short which detailed moments in the lives of five city-dwellers.

 

The NBR also co-sponsored the Annual Columbia University Film Festival and bestowed grants to three student filmmakers on April 1st. $3000 went to Dennis Lee for Jesus Henry Christ, $2000 went to Randall Dottin for A-Alike, and $1000 went to Gustavo Moraes for Based on a True Story.

 

The National Board of Review, with no commercial ties to the industry, was founded in 1909 to support excellence and free expression in film.   The group works to endow scholarships and grants for film students and to underwrite educational film programs.   In addition, the NBR screens over 300 films per year and honors the very best in a variety of categories of film, direction and performance at the awards gala each winter.
