Andrew Spieler
Andrew Spieler, 2008 NBR Student Grant Winner for his Undergraduate Senior Thesis film All Before Dawn, has been busy earning his Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the prestigious American Film Institute. In the past two years at AFI, Andrew has written and Directed four short films, two of which he also wrote. He is currently in the final stages of post for his final Thesis Film for AFI entitled The Response. The film will be premiering in Los Angeles in early September of 2009 and entering into the festival track soon after.
The story of The Response centers around two paramedics during the early hours of the LA Riots of 1992 and aims to highlight issues of race and color that are still relevant to today's society. The film won two scholarship awards before principle photography began based on the caliber of the script. The first was the Bridges / Larson Production scholarship award for "Best Screenplay" (2008) and the second was a Production Grant from FotoKem also for "Best Screenplay" (2009).
Andrew earned his BFA, cum laude, as a Writer / Director in May '07 from the SUNY Purchase Film Conservatory. He has attended and taught courses offered by the New York Film Academy in both Directing and Acting for film held at Harvard. Actively involved in the film and television field for over ten years, Andrew has worked for his local cable access station and has formed his own freelance production company, ASPire Films. Prior to starting his graduate studies at AFI, Andrew worked on the independent featureThe Poker Club, starring Jonathan Schaech and Judy Reyes, directed by Tim McCann in the summer of ’07.
This fall, Andrew will be interning at the Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab and traveling to festivals to promote his thesis film The Response. He will also be developing a feature length version of the short.
