New York, NY -- November 25, 2002 -- The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures will present
a Special Award to George Lucas honoring his visionary cinematic achievements.
The presentation will take place at the annual awards gala on Tuesday, January
14, 2003, at Tavern on the Green in New York.
George Lucas has been entertaining audiences with his extraordinary work for over thirty
years. As a writer, director, and producer he has been responsible
for some of the most successful films of all time. But more than that, Lucas has
changed the perception of what it means to have a theatrical experience, with
his push to greatly improve the quality of both sound and visuals on the world's
movie screens. He has revolutionized movie theater sound with his THX sound
system, and improved picture quality with his Theater Alignment Program.
Always an innovator, Lucas established Industrial Light and Magic in 1975 to create
groundbreaking special effects for his films. The company continues to grow,
trailblazing into the world of digital imagery, with Lucas himself making Star Wars: Episode II Attack of
the Clones, the first major motion picture to be captured and presented entirely
in the digital format.
The
full list of 2002 National Board of Review honorees, as well as the NBR's
top ten English language films and top five foreign films will be released on
Wednesday, December 4, 2002.
The
National Board of Review, with no commercial ties to the industry, was founded
in 1909 to support excellence and free expression in film. The group screens over
300 films per year and honors the very best in a variety of categories of film,
direction and performance. In addition, the NBR works to endow scholarships
for film students and to underwrite educational film programs.
